Gender bias in sports

… His comments come, as the Huffington Post points out, just a few days after a study by the U.K.’s Cambridge University Press found that male athletes are three times as likely to be discussed in a sporting context as women, who are frequently described based on their age, marital status, or appearance.

(CNN)Welcome to the world of sport. It’s a world where men are “strong, big, real, great or fastest,” while women are more likely to be “aged, pregnant or unmarried.”
That’s the conclusion of new research from the UK’s Cambridge University Press, which has looked at the way we talk about men and women in sport.

Three strikes law

Three strikes lawThe three-strikes law significantly increases the prison sentences of persons convicted of a felony who have been previously convicted of two or more violent crimes or serious felonies, and limits the ability of these offenders to receive a punishment other than a life sentence.
Under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, the “Three Strikes” statute (18 U.S.C. § 3559(c)) provides for mandatory life imprisonment if a convicted felon:
been convicted in federal court of a “serious violent felony” and has two or more previous convictions in federal or state courts, at least one of which is a “serious violent felony.” The other offense may be a serious drug offense.
The statute goes on to define a serious violent felony as including murder, manslaughter, sex offenses, kidnapping, robbery, and any offense punishable by 10 years or more which includes an element of the use of force or involves a significant risk of force.

These three states are making a Trump win basically impossible

By Aaron Blake 8/12/2016

Four new NBC News/Marist College polls released Friday show Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leading her Republican rival by five points in Florida, nine points in North Carolina and double digits in Colorado (14) and Virginia (13). All four states have been battlegrounds in recent presidential elections.

And really, it’s those last two numbers that show just how massively difficult Trump’s path to the presidency is right now. Because without Colorado and Virginia — and a third state where he trails by double digits, Pennsylvania — he’s all but sunk.
